Care For Clear Aligners

Aug 01, 2021

A lot of people while undergoing reparative and restorative dental procedures, do not want it to be known to everybody. Some people feel self-conscious and even develop low self-esteem wearing visible corrective dental devices. However, these dental devices, regardless of their visibility, help to correct a lot of dental irregularities. These irregularities include misaligned, crooked, gapped, cracked, and chipped teeth. These irregularities might be a result of accidents or improper teeth development. Dental infections and diseases such as gum disease can disrupt the proper development of the teeth. Also, trauma, accident, and injury to the mouth can disfigure or damage a tooth. Corrective dental devices can be used to fix these dental issues. However, a lot of people do not like to use them because they are too obvious. How then can these dental irregularities be treated in people whom obvious dental devices affect socially? Clear aligners are the answer.

Clear aligners, also known as invisible aligners, are a type of inconspicuous orthodontic treatment device that corrects misaligned or crooked teeth. They are a transparent, plastic form of the traditional braces used for dental restorative treatments. Clear aligners are built for convenience and flexibility. Clear aligners are commonly called Invisalign by most people. This is because Invisalign is a brand that makes clear aligners. Invisalign was the first brand to make clear aligners in the year 1997. It was created as an option for people seeking discreet restorative dental treatment.

Clear aligner trays are custom-made for people depending on the dental defect they are treating, and its severity. Clear aligners might not be entirely invisible, but they fit over your teeth and are less conspicuous like their counterparts, traditional braces. Clear aligners are a suitable treatment option for both children and adults.

Dental Defects Treated By Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are used to treat a variety of dental defects. These dental defects include:

  • Overbite: This is a dental defect in which the upper front teeth do not match the lower teeth. The upper front teeth stick out over the lower teeth.
  • Diastema: This is when there is a small or large gap between the teeth.
  • Underbite: This defect is the opposite of an Overbite. It occurs when the lower front teeth are far too forward while the upper teeth are set far too backward.
  • Open bite: This is a vertical gap between the upper and the lower teeth when biting down. The upper and lower teeth, in this case, do not meet when the mouth is shut. This type of malocclusion is rare.
  • Crowded teeth: This is when there are not enough spaces for the teeth in the mouth. So they are crowded together.

For clear aligners to work the way they should, you are to wear them for about twenty to twenty-two hours daily. You should only remove clear aligners while eating, drinking, flossing, brushing, or cleaning the aligners. Other factors that might affect the effectiveness of your clear aligners are:

  • Clear aligners work better on children and teenagers because their teeth are still in the developing stage.
  • The severity of orthodontic problems. The lesser the severity of your malocclusion, the faster and more efficient your clear aligners work.

How Do I Keep My Clear Aligners Clean?

Your aligner braces should be kept clean because you put them in your mouth. Dirty aligners can cause infections and have adverse effects on your dental health.

You are to rinse your aligners with clean water every night before you sleep. Brush your aligners with a soft-bristled brush and a mild liquid soap to remove food particles. Rinse thoroughly after washing.

  • Store your aligners in their protective case when not using them.
  • Rinse your aligners with clean water every time you remove them.
