The orthodontic professionals at uSmile Orthodontics, located near you in Phoenix, Arizona, want your experience with braces to be as comfortable and as worry-free as possible. This article gives 5 tips for brushing properly when wearing braces. Effective brushing and cleaning will alleviate most of the worries that surface during the passage through the braces phase.

  • Begin Without ToothpasteThis method enables you to see where you are brushing without the obstruction of toothpaste foam. When you are sure that all large and visible food particles are removed, then you can begin brushing with a small amount of toothpaste.
  • Remove Visible Debris and PlaqueAs stated in Item 1 above, the removal of large food particles and plaque is important. Brushing first without this removal technique will press the particles and the plaque into the braces and the gums.
  • Use a Soft-Bristled ToothbrushIt is best to start off using a brush with soft bristles. The focus on brushing is the removal of food particles between, and plaque on the surface of, the teeth. This can be accomplished by the gentle brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Hard bristles will irritate the gums and cause unnecessary discomfort.
  • Brush for 2 Full MinutesAlways brush for at least 2 full minutes to make sure all debris is removed from between the braces and from the surface of the teeth. There are electric toothbrushes with timers to help keep track of time.
  • Use a Toothpaste You LikeThe enforcement of good brushing habits becomes easier when we like the toothpaste. As long as the toothpaste contains fluoride, the brand and flavor do not matter. However, avoid toothpaste with whiteners as the surface of teeth under the braces will not be exposed to the toothpaste. There is a good chance that your teeth will be different shades of white when the braces are removed. It is important to maintain regular dental check-ups and cleanings while in braces. The special care of teeth while in braces does not replace effective oral healthcare.
